Around 300 million people around the world have legal access to some form of assisted dying. In Gibraltar, there is no such legislation.
However, assisted dying is the subject of a bill set to be debated next month in the UK parliament, with the Gibraltar Government telling GBC it is also considering its own bill.
Our reporter Katy Docker has found it’s a divisive topic.

At least 62 are known to have died after torrential rain caused devastating flash floods in Valencia south-eastern Spain. Spanish weather service AEMET reported that Chiva, in the Valencia region, recorded 491mm of rain in just eight hours on Tuesday - the equivalent to a year's worth of rain. Gibraltarian Jason Goldwin says it’s a sad day for his adopted city Valencia, which has been the worst hit by the flash floods.
Whilst the worst of the weather has affected the southeastern Spain, Gibraltar has certainly felt the heavy rains too. Zoe Hutton from the Met Office explained what we can expect over the coming days.
Cultural Services was "very saddened" that a mural was vandalised at Prince Edward's Gate, but is it part of a wider problem with graffiti and a lack of civic pride? We explored the topic with Janet Howitt of the Environmental Safety Group and Finlay Savignon Watson, who volunteers for the Nautilus Project.
And, there are changes at the RGP, with both the Drugs Squad and the Community Police team being disbanded, due to resourcing issues. The intention and ambition is that this will allow the RGP to have a more visible presence in areas where they have not had in the past. Ros Astengo told us more.

Gibraltar's Coroner's Court will open an inquest touching on the death of Simon Parkes, the sailor who disappeared in Gibraltar on the 12th December 1986. The Minister for Justice, Nigel Feetham, has given his consent. This follows a campaign by GBC Journalist Ros Astengo, with the support of lawyers acting on a pro-bono basis, to help bring justice for his family.
Over the course of the morning the MET office issued a weather advisory for heavy rain from ten this morning until one tomorrow night. A separate heavy rain warning may be issued if the total rainfall is expected to be more than 50 millimetres in six hours. We spoke to Principal Meteological Officer, Katy Lowe.
The Police Federation says a strong message needs to be sent out to anyone who believes they can use violence against emergency service and care workers with no more than a slap on the wrist. The police union says officers dedicate their lives to protecting the public and all they ask in return is to be protected in return. Chairman of the Police Federation, Calum Bruce, stressed this further in the studio.
Jose Mari Ruiz brought us the latest in sports, with both men’s and women’s football, the Special Olympics in Monaco, and Ironman 70.3 over in Tangier.
And, tomorrow is Stroke Awareness Day - there are several symptoms that you can look out for which can make a difference for the patient. In 2014 our Sports Co-ordinator, John Sheppard suffered a stroke during an indoor football match. The reaction time by those around him saved his life.

The Environmental Agency are celebrating the season of giving with a toy drive, aiming to give every child a special gift under the tree at Christmas. They're asking for people to donate toys suitable for kids between the ages of 0-12. Chris Segovia and Ryan Asquez from the Agency told us how the idea came about.

World Polio Day highlights the global efforts to end poliomyelitis (polio) worldwide. Polio is a life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus, which the World Health Assembly committed to eradicate in 1988. The WHO European Region was declared polio-free in 2002 and has sustained this status every year since then. We spoke to Eric Rowbottom and Ron Wagemakers, who emphasized the importance of the polio vaccine.

Cancer Relief Gibraltar have teamed up with MACH Coaching and Consulting to help out. We spoke to MACH Director Christina Giuffre and Senior Centre Nurse at Cancer Relief Vanessa Cross.
A new local charity is dedicated to enhancing the well being of those in need on the Rock. Louise Goncalves and Nicola Elliott from “Get Giving” are passionate about helping others, and hope that their humanitarian projects and financial assistance can make a difference to the community.
This morning the annual ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar took place. It’s an important event in the history of the Royal Navy, the service was attended by Navy personnel, along with the Governor, the Chief Minister the Mayor, and the Commander British Forces. Normality has returned at the frontier after a chaotic morning that caused significant delays for commuters. The disruption was triggered by the Spanish police, who were instructed to stamp all Gibraltar passports, rendering Red ID cards invalid. In response, Gibraltar implemented reciprocal measures at 7 AM, requiring Borders and Coastguards to accept only passports. Our News Editor Christine Vasquez was at the border and spoke to the Chief Minister.
Graham Southwell, 63, has been found guilty of 19 sexual offences against children. The former GHA and St John Ambulance volunteer has been on trial at the Supreme Court for the last four weeks. The jury took just under 90 minutes to unanimously convict him on all counts. Melanie Chipolina-Guilliano has been following this story, and was in the courts when the verdict was given.
The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration for valour in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. There is a charity dinner tonight to raise funds for the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Benevolent Fund. His Excellency, the Chief Minister and Commander British Forces will all be in attendance. We spoke to one of the guest speakers Warrant Officer Johnson Beharry VC - one of only 3 living British Victoria Cross recipients.
And, in the UEFA Nations League, Gibraltar beat San Marino one-nil with a 62nd minute goal from Ethan Britto. It means the national team now sit at the top of Group D with four points, and remains the only unbeaten team in the group. Our sports reporter Louis Parrall told us more about the game, and looked ahead to the team’s upcoming away match against Liechtenstein this weekend.

It’s world mental health day tomorrow, so we have dedicated the entirety of today’s episode to discuss this important topic.
The third annual mental health festival, sponsored by GibSams, has opened with a focus on the impact of technology on young people. We spoke to suicide prevention campaigner, Ian Russell, and GP Doctor Susie Davies, who are delivering workshops on combating phone addiction in young people.
Meanwhile the GHA is organising a Mental Health Acceptance event at Casemates. The event will bring together the RGP, the Government's Wellbeing Team, the Fire and Rescue Service, the unions and charities. Health Minister Gemma Arias-Vasquez stressed the need for the community to embrace how mental health affects people at work. GHA Director General Kevin McGee urged the public to visit the stalls tomorrow between midday and 5pm. Natasha Cerisola, representing the GHA, told us more.
And the Mental Welfare Society also have an event looking at young people and mental health. Bring together Dr Karen Surridge, clinical psychologist; Dr Javier Quietero, consultant psychiatrist, and Mark Montovio, educationalist and therapeutic counsellor. A Bill to amend the Housing Act has been published. It aims to improve the legislative framework governing both public housing and private rent control. On Government Housing, it aims to modernise the legislation to allow for modern relationships, while the second half of the Act aims to remove unfair rent protection to avoid old properties falling into disrepair. Our reporter Shelina Assomull has been looking at the proposed new law.
The digital world is growing. Most of us carry around a smart phone that allows us to access the internet and share personal moments with just a few taps. But are some of us oversharing? And are we creating a digital footprint from an increasingly young age? The Regulatory Authority has issued the results of its latest Privacy Awareness School Survey titled, “Your Digital Footprint”. The GRA's Louise Busto came to the studio to discuss the findings.
It's Dyslexia Awareness Week and we're looking into a condition of neurodevelopmental origin that mainly affects reading, writing and spelling. It's usually recognised as a specific learning disorder in children. Whilst typical dyslexic challenges include reading skills, memory abilities, and coordination and time management, there are many strengths association with dyslexia too - leadership and social influence, creativity and initiative, and analytical thinking and innovation. Claire Francis & Joseph Samson to tell us more about the disorder.

The UK is giving up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, decades after the population of the archipelago was displaced. The move has received widespread attention in the international press. The Gibraltar Government says it's important to observe how different the case of Chagos is to Gibraltar, and that the UK has made cast iron guarantees to the Rock on sovereignty. Shelina Assomul spoke to the Chief Minister as well as the Leader of the Opposition.
Yesterday evening the Ceremony of the Keys was held at Casemates Square, continuing the tradition from the days of the Great Siege. The Commander of British Forces Tom Guy says that Gibraltar is fully prepared to support Armed Forces operations worldwide. He said the event reaffirms the commitment to Gibraltar, and said he was happy with the support from the community.
In this week’s edition of "Llanitos Abroad", where we speak to Gibraltarians who are living and working away from the Rock, we travelled up to Madrid with poet Jonathan Teuma.
Jose Mari Ruiz gave a look ahead to this weekend’s sports events and matches; he himself spoke to us remotely from a charity 5-a-side tournament in aid of GBC Open Day. He told us how the GBC team was getting on.
October is cancer awareness month, and a group of make-up artists have come together to give their backing to a very worthy cause, Breast Cancer Support's 'Move the Boob' campaign. They've put together a video on social media, and are hoping to raise a good amount of money for the charity during the next few weeks. We spoke to Megan, Melanie and Annabella, who are all part of the team.

The Cross Frontier Group has stressed the social and economic importance of a treaty agreement to the Chief Minister. A meeting was held at Number Six at the group's request. The group comprises unions, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, and their equivalent counterparts from Spain. Kevin Ruiz told us more.
The GHA is once again supporting the 'Stoptober' campaign, encouraging smokers to quit for 28 days and beyond. The campaign follows the NHS campaign in the UK, where research shows that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to improve public health and reduce smoking-related illnesses. We spoke to Director of Public Health Helen Carter, and Aiden Lane of the GHA's Smoking Cessation clinic to the studio.
There's a big charity event this weekend raising money for the GBC Open Day fund. Ian Howes and our very own Stefan Borge will be "Rocking around the Rock" on Saturday morning and encourage you to get involved. They told us more about the three lap challenge, and their inspiration behind it.
And, in what seems to be a very busy weekend on the Rock, the Diocese of Gibraltar Rosary Crusade is also happening this coming Saturday. It’s happening at the Catholic Community Centre from 10am. Frank Mifsud told us more about the event.

Local navy enthusiast Michael Sanchez was a teenager in 1982 when the Falklands war broke out between Britain and Argentina. Sensing that Gibraltar would play a vital strategic role for the British Armed Forces, he began a diary chronicling the events which would last for 74 days. Now, over 40 years later, Michael's published it as a book... it's called "Falklands conflict - A diary from Gibraltar".
What is 'Gibraltarian English'? Why is it worth studying local authors and their writing? Professor Elena Seaone of the University of Vigohas been studying variation in World Englishes, including interactions between Gibraltar English and Llanito.
And, the International Day of Older People has been marked by the Ministry of Equality. How do older people on the Rock feel and are they stereotyped? Our reporter Kevin Ruiz asked people for their thoughts along Main Street this morning.

This weekend saw around 600 volunteers take part in the latest clean up the world campaign. Spanning over 30 teams, they worked to clear waste and restore key sites, highlighting the importance of a cleaner future for Gibraltar. The effort also raised awareness for better waste facilities and stricter fly-tipping enforcement. Kevin Ruiz was out and about speaking to those volunteers and getting an idea of how it all went.
The Photographic Society are currently exhibiting at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery. The annual competitive exhibition has seen Maria Luisa Pau win the overall prize with 'Blue Steps' - an image that also won first in the beginner's section. Leslie Linares, Chairperson Photographic Society and Marie Risso, member of the society and winner of this year's Alwani Cup told us more about the competition, which has become a staple of the Rock’s cultural calendar.
We looked back at a busy weekend in Sports with Jose Mari Ruiz, including how the 10th Gibraltar vs Royal Marines rugby tournament went, the latest local football results, and the preliminary rounds of the bowling masters, and how Kim Baglietto retained her Marbella Half marathon title.

We spoke to the GRFU development officer Tom Reed and national team head coach Lee Forty ahead of the big weekend.
Cancer Relief's Biggest Coffee Morning took place today. Aside from the drinks and treats that we’ve come to expect from the event, this year they have also incorporated a Bake Off competition! The winning cake was a gin and tonic sponge cake by Jane Russell. Judges Sharon Garcia from Piece of Cake and GBC’s Ros Astengo told us how difficult is was to pick a favourite.
Jose Mari Ruiz filled us in on all the local sport happening this weekend, with Gibraltar’s cricketers taking on Serbia and some tricky fixtures for Europa FC and St Joseph’s.

The Chief Minister has said he trusts Labour and acknowledges that this Labour Government has gone further in protecting Gibraltar's interests than any before it. Speaking to Times Radio during the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Fabian Picardo said both the Labour and Conservative Governments had made mistakes in the past, but said Foreign Secretary David Lammy had insisted that Gibraltar should be represented at treaty talks.
An emotional protest was held outside No.6 Convent Place this morning, where Maryam Senouni chained herself to the cannons outside the Chief Minister’s office. Her 15 year old daughter Yamina suffers from Pura Syndrome; she is wheelchair bound and requires round the clock care. Kevin Ruiz has been speaking to Maryam, who says that Yamina’s housing situation is having a major impact on her health and quality of life.
Is your personal data safe? How do you look after your personal data online and on your mobile phone? Are you concerned your data might be vulnerable? Steven Sanchez from the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority explained what personal data is and how we should keep it safe.

A survey has been launched by The Department of Education, Director of Public Health, the Department of Paediatrics at the GHA and the University of Gibraltar. They’re asking parents and guardians to answer a few questions about the use of devices, video games and what their spending habits are when playing video games. We spoke to GHA Paediatrician Dr Lorena Soler Casale, Professor Zsolt Demetrovics of the University of Gibraltar, and by Bayside teacher Dale Moreno.
Another concerned parent Selwyn Figueras has launched a petition, currently supported by over 700 signatories, calling on Government to prioritise the urgent implementation of a Department of Education-led, effective ban on the use of smartphones by children across all schools in Gibraltar. He also joined in on the discussion.
And, today’s parents have a unique challenge of navigating raising their children in an increasingly digital and online world. They often have concerns about screen time and video games due to potential impacts on their children's health and well-being. Kathy Sanchez and Claire Bensadon are both parents of young children, and believe that balancing screen time and setting boundaries can help address these concerns.

An international portrait and figurative art exhibition - Ace Art Rock & Paper II - opens this evening at The Fine Arts Gallery, and runs until 27th September. Artists Carmen Lupion, Sara Gomez, Diocles Laime and Luca Raven told us more about what inspired their pieces.
And, it was late in 1982, after 13 years, that the border, partially re-opened. It was a huge moment in Gibraltar's history, it had a big impact on daily life, on work, family, and culture. It influenced the relationship between two communities on either side of the border fence. Later this week, local documentarian Stephen Cumming will be hosting a talk across the border in La Linea, about life post-closed frontier.

There are big changes happening at GBC, both on television and on radio, and the new TV schedule includes the return of an old classic! The Magic Garden is back, re-invented, and it airs this evening! We spoke to the producer of the show Aimie Desoisa and Kaigan Garcia who, alongside Kim Soiza, will present the show.
The Gibraltar Government says it remains committed to the Trilateral Forum for Dialogue. The comment came ahead of today's meeting between the British and Spanish foreign ministers in London. The UK Government says it would "never agree to any bilateral negotiations over Gibraltar between the UK and Spain - whether under any process or on any ad hoc basis". News Editor Christine Vasquez has been following the story.
On the 30th of September the residents at Queen’s Hotel are facing eviction and being relocation to Sunrise Hostel on Devil’s Tower Road. Many are worried that the move will cause over-crowding and any communal spaces will be lost. Shadow Minister for Care and Opportunity, Atrish Sanchez visited the Queen's hotel and came to the studio to discuss the current situation.

Today’s episode is the last of our At The Beach series, recorded live from the Montagu Bathing Pavilion, known by the regulars as the GASA Bathing Pavilion.
Christine Doolan celebrated National Day at the Pavilion, and took advantage of the earlier opening time by decorating the space with red and white. By all accounts there was a lovely community atmosphere.

Kenneth Avellano is considered by regulars as the unofficial boss of the Pavilion. He loves the convenience of the place and how family friendly it is. He described how he goes looking for starfish and other creatures in the area with his grandchildren.
And, Denise Bossino interrupted her lunch to tell us how much she loves the Pavilion, and goes there every day regardless of the weather! She wishes that bathers would be allowed to stay later than 8pm.

Being right next to the airport, Western Beach is a great spot for plane spotting, and the use of drones has become increasingly popular. Trevor Hammond from the Directorate of Civil Aviation told us how they keep drone activity on the Rock safe.
Mario Nuñez is a regular at Western Beach. He told us what the beach was like when it part of the MOD. He told us about the strong family atmosphere there, even when non-regulars go when it’s levante!
Daphne Alecio believes that Western Beach is the forgotten beach, yet despite this it seems to be more popular than ever this summer. But it’s not perfect – she told us about the issues with the cleanliness of the sand.
It’s the first year that Michael Perez started coming to Western Beach, and he has fallen in love with the place. He told us why he plans to continue coming to Western in the future.

The Teachers Union, NASUWT, says it is in dispute with the Government over what it considers to be worsening pupil behaviour at Westside School, and claims to have secured a mandate for industrial action. The Government however says it remains engaged with union representatives on the concerns they have raised, and is working actively to resolve all matters. Our reporter Jonathan Sacramento has been following the story.
Jose Mari Ruiz had just returned from a press conference held by the GFA ahead of their friendly against Andorra tomorrow. They spoke about the importance of finally bringing international matches back to home soil.

September marks Suicide Prevention Month, and GibSams have come together with several charities for an awareness day at John Mackintosh Square. Today’s podcast was recorded live from Piazza, where we spoke to of the key figures advocating for mental health.
This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative”, aiming to inspire people, communities, organisations and governments to face up to the challenge that suicide poses.
Before diving into this important conversation, sports reporter Jose Mari Ruiz brought us the latest in local sport from the weekend.
‘Love, Compassion, Hope’ is emblazoned on the banners for the charity ‘Walking Together’. Denise Wilkinson and Alan Clarke told us what their support group represents, and how they help those who have lost loved ones to suicide.
The Youth Service has been running in Gibraltar since 1963. Rebecca Figueras told us more about the variety of opportunities and services for the youth and have worked with partner organisations to support young people.
Conchita Triay from the Mental Welfare Society spoke about how mental health awareness has come a long way in the last few years, but now the focus needs to be on implementing an efficient system to support those in need.
GibSams’ Brendy Cuby told us what the impetus was for organising this event, and how the goal is for people to feel free to talk about suicide without fear or stigma.
Department of Education’s Jackie Linares and Natasha Cerisola from The Health Authority told us how young people are being supported and how vital it is to focus on suicide prevention.

Earlier this week an exhibition on Llanito opened at the Fine Arts Gallery in Casemates. The exhibition has been curated by the University of Cambridge and the National Archives, and brings together a wealth of research into the origins of the language. Christine Vasquez has been following the story.
There's a new event happening in the next couple of weeks, as part of September's national celebrations. ‘Rock El Kasbah’ is billed as the Calle Comedia street party, with live performances, both dramatic and musical, and food and drink thrown in for good measure. El Kasbah's Lauren Linares, and musician Mark Muscat from Broken Arrows told us what we can expect at this new event.
Gibraltar is well-known for raising money for charity and our guests are hosting a Charity Concert in aid of Cancer Relief Gibraltar. “Keep the Faith” is the idea of Nathan Villalba and he reached out to Stylos to collaborate with him. Lilian Montero from Stylos, Bianca Yeo of Cancer Relief and Nathan Villalba told us more about the show.
And, Christmas may seem a long way away, but the Musicians Association of Gibraltar and Andria Olivares are already looking ahead to Christmas productions. They're holding auditions next week for 'BELIEVE: Once Upon a Christmas'. We spoke to Andria about what they’ll be looking out for in the auditions.

Jimmy Cavilla walks his rescue dogs at El Rolli almost every day, as it is the only beach that allows dogs to swim even in the summer months. To him it is vital that public access is maintained for the enjoyment of the local and their pets.
Sister Dee, known locally for her music, spends almost every afternoon at El Rolli, and described as a place for free spirits. She explained how regulars have a great respect for the area and about the amazing wildlife encounters that she’s witnessed there over the years.
Dog owner Lorraine Moberly lives very close by and moved there in part to be right next to El Rolli. She has enjoyed taking her rescue dogs there over the last 20 years. She suggested some features to make the area safe whilst preserving the heritage.
Plans that were proposed in 2021 to develop El Rolli led the Environmental Safety Group to join forces with the Heritage Trust and the Natural History Society presented a joint front to oppose it. ESG’s Janet Howitt explained why it is so important to protect the heritage and marine life.
And, Lewis Stagnetto from the Nautilus Project told us about the abundance of marine life in the area, including two species of seahorse! He stressed the importance of protecting the area’s heritage from decay.

The Fine Arts Association has organised a Graduate Visual Arts Showcase at the GEMA Gallery, which opened this morning. The exhibition brings together pieces from five local university graduates, with their own individual styles on show for the next two weeks. We spoke to Victor Gonzalez from the Fine Arts Association, alongside artists Asta Azopardi and Tyrone Vera.
The Gibraltar Fair kicked off on Friday, but for people not able to go to the fair themselves, GBC will be bringing the fair into their homes. Stefan Borge and Jose Mari Ruiz will be down at the Rooke site this evening bringing us coverage on GBC Television. They gave us a flavour of what will be happening this evening.
Ros Astengo told us about what’s been happening at the Europa Stadium – she was there earlier today to see the upgrades made to the turf to make the pitch FIFA approved. Gibraltar will finally be able to host international matches on home soil as early as next month!
Jose Mari Ruiz stuck around to bring us the latest in local sport, including two big international events with local representatives in both sailing and golf that took place over the weekend.
And, do you fancy un vinito? Rioja, Albariño, Malbec, Sauvignon blanc? This Friday the 9th Wine Festival take place down at Reclamation Road. Two new sets of European Union border control mechanisms will come into effect, the introduction for the new entry exit system has now been confirmed for the 10th November, and the Visa waiver programme in early 2025. Tonight is opening night for the Gibraltar Fair! It promises to be jam packed with rides, food, and entertainment for the whole family. Seamus Bryne, who has been getting everything ready for the fair, told us what we can look forward to over the coming week or so at the former Rooke site.

A section of scaffolding has collapsed outside the old NatWest building on Corral Road. The Royal Gibraltar Police says no injuries have been reported. The road has been closed to traffic and pedestrians and will be closed for several days. Our reporter Christina Cortes was at the scene.
And, its GCSE Results Day! It’s a nerve-wracking and busy day for both staff and pupils across all of Gibraltar’s secondary schools. We had the chance to speak to each of them in turn: From Bayside teacher Natalie Cocklan and student Sophie Lines, as well as Westside teacher Zinah porter and student Art Wicks from Westside School.
Joelle Valverde, teacher at Prior Park’s Joelle Valverde, as well as two students Isabella Crowther and Darren Cerisola told us about the journey that they’ve been on to arrive at the results day.
Karla Imossi is a teacher at the College and was joined by college student Paris Stepney, who returned to education after leaving school for the working world and has achieved great results today.
We also caught up with the Senior Education Advisor from the Department of Education Melba Noguera. She gave us an insight in what goes into preparing for results day and how they help students know what options are available to them once they know their grades.

Tito Vallejo was a former pool manager at Europa Pool, and shared some memories of what was then known as Nuffield Pool. As Tito is also a historian, he also he gave us a brief history of the area and how it was once used as barracks.
As part of this summer series, we've spoken to lifeguards at some of the locations that we’ve visited. This time we spoke to Ethan Licudi about the specific challenges of lifeguarding the pool.
The RAF air cadets use Europa Pool for the swimming proficiency every year. Tony Macedo from the No 2 Squadron told us why the air cadets need to swim as well as the many other events they do, such as the Special Olympics, Rugby 7s, and Torque the Rock.
We also had the chance to speak to some of the pool regulars: Rose Graham praised the accessibility of the pool compared to our local beaches; Barbara Jurado described how the toilets at the pool are in need of refurbishment; and Alex Martinez gave us her perspective as a parent at how practical the pool is for her family.

The Nautilus Project says fishing with illegal commercial "purse seine" fishing nets harms the eco-system, as they indiscriminately fish anything that gets caught in it. Last night a fishing boat was spotted using what appear to be these nets off the East Side. The Environment Department's vessel, Storm Petrel, dealt with the incident by escorting the boat out of Gibraltar waters. Claire Hernandez told us more.
GBC ran a story regarding the Overseas Santorini tanker in recent days, in which she sought to restock supplies and fuel on the Rock. In the end the vessel did not make port or refuel, but did receive food and other provisions from local companies. We reflect on the challenges that the news team have faced in covering the story.
Five years since it's inaugural party, the final 'Que Pasa' event was held at the Europa Sports Arena on Saturday night. It featured a range of DJ's - both local and international - and according to the organisers it went smoothly. Nonetheless, organisers Jestin Benyunes and Jonathan Collado say it has become unsustainable to keep the festival going in future.
And, we look ahead to some great live music happening tomorrow. Local band Cedar will be performing, alongside Guy Valarino & The Gentlemen in Ocean Village. We spoke to Daryll Pallas, who plays the drums for Cedar, as well as singer Guy Valarino.

SUPAbility is a new chartity doing great work with young people. They offer stand up paddle facilities to those with physical disability, or those with mental struggles with anxiety or similar conditions. Ben Hassan from the charity told us more.
Beachgoers Christine Sene and Dawn Francis told us what they love about Sandy Bay, but also what can be improved, particularly regarding parking and ball games disrupting bathers.
And, with Sandy Bay being such a popular spot for stand-up paddle it’s also a great base to explore some of the nearby caves. Former Transport Minister Paul Balban is part of the community of regular SUP boarders, who go out often in the mornings and has had some great encounters with marine life.

Number Six has confirmed to GBC that the Captain of the Port is considering a request for bunkering from the Overseas Santorini. A number of UK MPs, including former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, have called on the Governor, Chief Minister, and UK Foreign Secretary to prevent the tanker from using Gibraltar's facilities. Over the last few years or so, you'll have noticed several grey Rock-shaped barriers along Main Street and Irish Town. Their primary purpose is the safety of pedestrians, but recently the government announced a street art project to bring them to life. Local artist Kyranne Lia was chosen to take up the task, and since she began painting last week there has already been a lot of positive feedback.

Erica McGrail won Best Performance at the 2024 UK’s National Drama Festival for her interpretation of Isobel in ‘Bull’ with Theatre Makers. ‘Bull’ was first performed at this year’s Gibraltar International Drama Festival, winning first prize. We caught up with Erica in the studio after returning home from the festival.
Summer is a time for rest, travel and new experiences. Bust just how important is it to switch off every now and then? News Editor Christine Vasquez has been on leave and shared her perspective on how some time off gave her a fresh view on reporting.
We spoke to our sports reporter Jose Mari Ruiz about the latest news from UEFA, who have fined Shelbourne FC over €21,000 for fans’ conduct during their match against St Josephs at the Europa Point Stadium on the 18th of July. Fans were heard chanting “Gibraltar es Español” with UEFA also noting that plastic cups were thrown from the away section during a brawl late in the game.
And, this year’s Heritage Awards have been announced. Recognising outstanding sensitivity or contribution to Gibraltar’s heritage, the awards have been presented since 1993. Past winners range from homes and workplaces to documentaries and the preservation of memorabilia. We spoke to Rebecca Fa of the Heritage Trust about the Awards.

The Government has not had any confirmation from Spain as to whether or not bridging measures for red ID card holders will continue once the new electronic frontier system is in place. Asked by GBC, Number Six said the only information available to the Government at this time is what it said in the Technical Notice issued this week. That notice said Spain and Schengen authorities are obliged to treat Gibraltarians as third-party nationals. This means, should the bridging measures not be extended, the full effect of a hard Brexit could become a reality for the first time for many Gibraltarians this November. Our reporter Christina Cortes told us more.

Gib Fibre accused Gibtel of unfairly denying access to its data centres, following years of litigation between the companies on related issues. The company, and its subsidiary Rockolo, always maintained they had acted properly. Puisne Judge John Restano ruled Gibtelecom did not abuse a dominant market position. Iain Triay Clarence was at the courts earlier today.
Do you find llanito, the way we talk and write in Gibraltar, interesting? Researchers and academics from Spanish, British, Swiss, Dutch, German and Italian universities are interested. They got together in Vigo, northwest Spain, with a number of Gibraltarian writers, the Gibraltar Government Archaeologist, local podcaster Michelle Rougeroni and linguists from GFAMS. We spoke to Manuel Enriles of GFAMS to discussed what the conference covered and why it matters.

The GHA has confirmed some of its services have been impacted by the global IT outage. Its medical computer system is not working. GBC understands this is used by GPs to book appointments, view patient notes, order prescriptions and make referrals. Shelina Assomull and Jonathan Sacramento told us more about the outage, and we also spoke to the GHA Director General Kevin McGee.
Cyber Security is a hot topic right now - both locally and globally - over the last few days we've been reporting a number of incidents of telephone banking scams with the total amount of money scammed now in the millions. Then this morning, news broke about a massive IT outage, affecting airports, businesses, transport links, supermarkets, and broadcasters around the world. It's an issue which is difficult to understand, it often - quite literally - goes over our heads. Peter Bassill shed some light on the situation.
The UEFA conference league qualifier between St Josephs and Shelbourne FC at the Europa Point Stadium was unfortunately overshadowed by chants of “Gibraltar es Espanol” by the Shelbourne fans before the game and after the fulltime whistle was blown by the referee. The hostile environment fostered by the Spanish team’s “Gibraltar es Español” chants may have reared its ugly head last night. GBC has received reports of one, possibly two, violent incidents in La Linea involving some young people from Gibraltar, who were hurt on their way back from the fair. Our information suggests 'Gibraltar Español' was heard during one of these violent incidents. Iain Triay Clarence brought us the details.
They have English accents and sound professional. And they've scammed Gibraltarian companies and individuals of literally millions of pounds. The number of reported incidents of telephone banking scams has now risen to more than 40, with the total amount of money scammed now in the millions. More reports are expected in the next 24 hours. How's the police dealing with it? Our reporter Jonathan Sacramento has spent some time with the RGP's Economic Crime Unit.

Members of the Spanish national football team have incurred the anger and frustration of Gibraltarians with chants of 'Gibraltar es español' during their Euro winning celebrations last night. On a main stage in Madrid, the Spanish players, spearheaded by captain Alvaro Morata and one of the players of the tournament, Rodri, led the crowd in the taunt, which has triggered widespread condemnation by media pundits, politicians, and the press. The Gibraltar FA says it is taking advice on filing an official complaint to UEFA, European football's governing body, and has the full backing of the Chief Minister. Our reporters Jonathan Sacramento and Kevin Ruiz have been following your reactions to the incident, as well as the media coverage outside the Rock.
What were you doing when you were 14 years old? Last month, local youngster Luca Coulthard became an English Open champion in Submission Grappling. We invited Luca to the studio with his proud father Matt Coulthard to find out more about submission grappling and what it was like achieving gold in the tournament.

The vast majority of respondents in a survey think the spread of misinformation and disinformation poses a significant threat to public discourse and democratic processes. But 8 in 10 feel confident in spotting fake news. The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority has published a report on the results collated from the media literacy survey which was carried out as part of its ‘Media Literacy Matters’ Campaign. We discussed the results with the GRA's Frank Trenado and Ibrahim Alba.
Jose Mari Ruiz told us about last night’s results from the UEFA conference league qualifiers. Magpies got their campaign off to a flying start with a 2-0 win over Derry City, while in the Republic of Ireland St Josephs suffered a 2-1 defeat to Shelbourne FC.
After a whopping 50 matches, the Euro 2024 gears up for the grand finale in Berlin, as Spain and England prepare to meet in Sunday’s final! Spain's route to the final has been swift and graceful, reminiscent of a flamenco dancer at the peak of their power. England's route was rather more stuttered and tough to watch, reminiscent of your dad on the dance floor. But ultimately they are in the final! Travelling abroad for medical appointments can be stressful on both the patient and family. The GHA have invested in new equipment that should help improve the patient experience of diagnoses. And ,the Taxi Association has launched a ride booking app which allows clients to order a taxi on their phones. The app is similar to the technology employed by other companies, such as ride sharing companies. You can't pay fares on the app at this stage, although the Association says this is in the works. The Pope has appointed Apostolic Nuncio Mark Miles to Costa Rica. The Gibraltarian Archbishop has been the Apostolic Nuncio in the Republic of Benin. Previously he was the papal ambassador to the West African country, and became the first Gibraltarian priest to hold such a senior diplomatic role and to be ordained an Archbishop. We spoke to the Bishop Carmel Zammitt about the appointment as well as News Editor Christine Vasquez.
The MP for Finchley and Golders Green, Sarah Sackman has been appointed Solicitor General. In a statement, the Labour MP of Gibraltarian origin said that after 14 years of a Conservative Government people’s trust in the rule of law and in the integrity of politics needed to be restored. The Chief Minister has welcomed the appointment saying he’s particularly pleased to note the calibre of the appointments being made by the Labour Government. The Solicitor General advises the Crown and the Cabinet as deputy to the Attorney General. She spoke to GBC last week after the General election.
And, during the summer the Bay and Strait of Gibraltar is a hotspot for tuna fishing. It's a hot topic, both from a political and sporting standpoint. We had a discussion on this in the studio with is Sam Marrache of the Tuna Fishing Club, as well and Christian Balban-Torres who recently competed in Gibraltar's first ever tuna fishing competition.

Police had to attend the Camp Bay pool on Friday when lifeguards were mobbed by a group of youths and some parents, leading to the closure of the pool. The Department of the Environment says it will not tolerate abusive behaviour. Christine Vasquez has been at Camp Bay today with the Department.
The GGCA has formed a working group that will look at pay and work conditions, following a unanimous vote by shop stewards. The group will be looking at improving the future for the workforce in Gibraltar. Union president, Darren Cerisola, joined us in the studio after a meeting this morning and told us how it went.
There were more cases of sexually transmitted infection gonorrhoea in England last year than at any time since records began more than 100 years ago. Thankfully, Gibraltar has not seen a similar rise, but sexual health is fundamental to overall health. We spoke to Laura Netto and Claire Gill of the Well Person Clinic.
And, it’s a big week for international Basketball on the Rock: Gibraltar is hosting Division C of the FIBA under 16 women's qualifiers. They'll take on Malta, Moldova and Albania in Group B. Head coach Monica Brown told us more about the tournament, alongside Brylee Costa and captain Isabelle Dalmedo.

Last week during his budget speech, the Minister for Financial Services Nigel Feetham announced that investors with three or more properties in their portfolio, not including their primary residence, will now be subject to a new tax on profits or gains. He said the new tax will target wealthy individuals who drive up prices by buying and selling property like a stock market. Many have welcomed the effort to discourage people using Gibraltar’s limited property as a stock market. But what will it curb investment? We spoke to estate agent Lewis Montegriffo.
Department of Education staff who have worked at the Hebrew School will be re-deployed to other government schools and services at the end of this academic year. This follows changes to the school's management structure. Shelina Assomull brought us the details.
On Saturday afternoon, England booked their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after beating Switzerland in a penalty shootout. Unsurprisingly, there's been plenty of support for the Three Lions here on the rock - particularly down at Ocean Village. How do people on the Rock feel about having Labour at the wheel? Christina Cortes spoke to locals, as well as the Chief Minister, about their reactions to the election result.
How long have you been at your job? On Sunday the congregation of St Joseph's Church came out to celebrate 40 years of Father Paul Bear's ordination. A day of prayer and celebration and a lot of reflection. We spoke to Father Bear in the studio.
Gerry Wood has been appointed as Gibraltar’s new archivist. We invited him to the studio to ask him how he feels about taking on the role.
It is arguably the most popular community event of the year - the Calentita Food Festival is finally upon us! Tomorrow evening, John Mackintosh Square and Campion Park will be awash with hungry bellies to enjoy cuisines and dishes from around the world. There are 20 stalls in place tomorrow, most of which are permanent, but we can look forward to some new additions for the 15th edition of the festival. Tomorrow, polling stations across the United Kingdom will open as the nation prepares to usher in a new prime minister. This is the first general election since a policy change in 2021 which removes a time limit on the eligibility of ex-UK residents. Paul Scully is a British former MP who served as a member of the Conservative Party from 2015 to 2024. He recently announced that he will not be standing in tomorrow's general election. We spoke to him about the elections as well as what brings him to Gibraltar.
And, the Minister with responsibility for taxation wants to make it more costly for wealthy individuals to buy and sell multiple properties like a stock market. Nigel Feetham told Parliament there will be a new tax on profits or gains for investors with three or more properties in their portfolio. Graham Jackson of the Association of Tax Advisors and our reporter Ros Astengo were closing following Mr Feetham’s speech.

A fire at the Port has been brought under control, with workers allowed to return to the area. The maritime salvage company Boluda told GBC the fire was on a barge that was being scrapped. The police have confirmed that no injuries have been reported. The Fire and Rescue Service and the RGP are on the scene, and had previously evacuated workers. Kevin Ruiz told us more.
Many members of the public made their feelings known Monday evening. Around 500 people protested outside Number Six, and blocked Main Street with bikes and cars. The initial anger over the old car levy seemed to have turned to wider issues, with chants of “Picardo out”. Christine Vasquez was at the heart of town and spoke to demonstrator Dean Penfold.
The Government made a U-turn on a "pollution levy" just hours after the budget announcement in Parliament, following public backlash. The measure got a lot of people talking. Fabian Picardo confirmed to GBC the measure to charge £520 to owners of vehicles over ten years old will NOT go ahead, and announced a consultation instead. Shelina Assomul has the details.
And, the Calpe Conference is an international academic event organised by the Gibraltar National Museum every year. In his thirteenth Budget address as Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo announced a surplus of £1.9m and record revenues, although departmental expenditure was 10% higher than forecast. This, he said, was despite the challenges of the past few years with rising costs fuelling inflation.However, he expressed optimism that a treaty deal will be delivered and that negotiations will come to a successful conclusion in the coming months. We broke down all the announcements from today’s Budget with our News Editor Christine Vasquez, and had the opportunity to put your questions to the Chief Minister in the studio.

The lawyer for the Government parties, Sir Peter Caruana, has told the McGrail Inquiry the former Commissioner chose to retire early because he knew the Chief Minister and the Governor had lost confidence in him. Now that the public hearings in the McGrail Inquiry have finished, the chairman has started to write his report and hopes to have a draft by early autumn.

It’s the second of two days of closing statements at The McGrail Inquiry. The former police commissioner’s lawyer Adam Wagner said the Chief Minister “pulled out every stop to protect JL and his mobile phone from the RGP warrant”. Mr Wagner told the Inquiry those “institutional guardrails” that “failed to protect” the former police commissioner have to be strengthened.
The Police Authority lawyer finished his closing yesterday afternoon. James Neish KC said "the GPA consists of public spirited citizens of Gibraltar who give up of their time generously and do not receive remuneration". Our reporter Ros Astengo has been following all of the closing statements and gave us more details.
And, Sister Patricia McLaughlin is an Irish Loreto missionary sister. She runs the 'Fe y Alegria' school in a shanty town on the outskirts of the Peruvian capital, Lima. You may remember Sister Patricia from her teaching career in Gibraltar. She taught at Westside School and at the Loreto Convent, where she was head teacher for eight years. We invited her to the studio to talk about her missionary work.

The parties involved in the McGrail Inquiry have begun giving their closing submissions. The Police’s lawyer Nick Cruz was the first to speak, followed by Paul Richardson's lawyer, Patrick Gibbs KC, and the Police Authority's lawyer, James Neish KC. Our reporter Jonathan Sacramento was at the Inquiry and helped us break down the main points on each of the submissions so far.
And, the Dance World Cup Finals kick off in Prague on 27th June. It's a 9 day event, featuring over 9,500 dancers from over 54 countries, including Gibraltar! Dancers from Stylos Dance Studios and Yalta Dance Studio qualified at the Gibraltar Live Qualifier. Yalta Pons and Darion Figueredo joined us in the studio alongside three of the dancers taking part in the competition: Amy Wink, Yelena Recagno and Sophia Celecia.

More than 60 people from Ceuta have protested outside New Mole House Police Station. They were demanding justice for two men killed by an RGP vessel which collided with their RHIB during a chase in Spanish waters in March 2020. Our reporter Iain Triay Clarence was there.
It’s a big day tomorrow for Gibraltar Athletics, as the European Small States Championships comes to the Rock for its 70th anniversary edition. Over 200 athletes from 17 countries will compete in both track and field. The president of the Gibraltar Athletics Association Frank Carreras was in the studio two competing athletes Reece Byrne and Sean Peñalver.
The Federation of Small Businesses is collaborating with Women in Enterprise on a number of events, relating to issues from parental leave to workplace pensions. Michaela Rees from the GFSB and Mary-Jane Feeke of Women In Enterprise told us more.

The EV Foundation has announced the renewal of the Barzilai Foundation Undergraduate Studies Bursary for the next academic year. The bursaries are for students who have successfully completed studies at Bayside School, Westside School or Gibraltar College within the past two years, have applied for entry into an undergraduate program outside of Gibraltar, and who can demonstrate a financial need in addition to the ‘Mandatory’ Award offered by the Government of Gibraltar. Nicole Jones, the face of the EV Foundation, told us more.
Leigh Dobinson is preparing to take on an Ironman 70.3 challenge in the Netherlands later this month, raising funds for Cancer Relief and the EV Foundation. We spoke to him about what motivated him to take on the challenge.

McGrail Inquiry Senior Investigating Officer John McVea has been given the top job at the Gibraltar Defence Police, GBC understands. Sources say three candidates from the UK were interviewed by the Commander British Forces for the role of Chief of Police. Mr McVea was said to have been the preferred candidate to take over from Rob Allen who has recently retired. Our reporter Ros Astengo brought us the details.
Bathing season is here, and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Gibraltar are marking Drowning Prevention Week, highlighting the importance of water safety. This is something we may take for granted in Gibraltar, as we're on the beach for three months of the year (at least), and our culture revolves to a certain extent around the sea, boats and swimming. We spoke to Michael Sene from the RLSS and Alain Gadd from the Department of the Environment.
This weekend saw the funeral for Alzheimer’s and dementia campaigner Daphne Alcantara who recently died aged 65. Daphne formed the Gibraltar Alzheimers and Dementia Society and spent many years advocating on behalf of people living with dementia and those caring for them. She always celebrated the hope of scientific progress towards treatment. Now there are two Gibraltar-based funds that are investing in academic research and clinical studies in areas of high need such as Alzheimer's. Stefanie Kearney told us more.
And, we discussed the latest from the weekend’s sports on the Rock with Robin Sheppard-Capurro, including an exciting victory for the Gibraltar Women’s cricket, who have won the Central Europe Cricket Cup in Prague! To top it off Sally Barton extended her record as the oldest international female cricketer, at the age of 67. We caught up with Sally, as well as with Helen Mumford, in the studio.
