  • 414 - Assisted Dying Debate, New Book on Llanito Christmas, Alameda Wildlife plus Pumpkin Carving, and Policing this Halloween

On today's edition of Gibraltar Today...

Around 300 million people around the world have legal access to some form of assisted dying. In Gibraltar, there is no such legislation.

However, assisted dying is the subject of a bill set to be debated next month in the UK parliament, with the Gibraltar Government telling GBC it is also considering its own bill.

Our reporter Katy Docker has found it’s a divisive topic.

    -

Is it too soon to talk about a good, locally-produced Christmas present?!

Manolo Galliano has just launched a new book - Pan Dulces & Mince Pies, A Llanito Celebration of Christmas Traditions and Memories.

    -

We talk to The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park about their efforts to use Halloween to get young people interested in conservation.

Vanda Marnoto will be here and Elizabeth Ulloa Chaura might just show me how to carve a pumpkin!

    -

And are you or your little ones celebrating Halloween today?

It’s quite a wet day, but what’s the policing plan for later?

We speak to the RGP's Acting Chief Inspector Phil Ackerley....

  • 413 - Flash Floods, Local weather, Civic Pride, RGP Changes

At least 62 are known to have died after torrential rain caused devastating flash floods in Valencia south-eastern Spain. Spanish weather service AEMET reported that Chiva, in the Valencia region, recorded 491mm of rain in just eight hours on Tuesday - the equivalent to a year's worth of rain. Gibraltarian Jason Goldwin says it’s a sad day for his adopted city Valencia, which has been the worst hit by the flash floods.

Whilst the worst of the weather has affected the southeastern Spain, Gibraltar has certainly felt the heavy rains too. Zoe Hutton from the Met Office explained what we can expect over the coming days.

Cultural Services was "very saddened" that a mural was vandalised at Prince Edward's Gate, but is it part of a wider problem with graffiti and a lack of civic pride? We explored the topic with Janet Howitt of the Environmental Safety Group and Finlay Savignon Watson, who volunteers for the Nautilus Project.

And, there are changes at the RGP, with both the Drugs Squad and the Community Police team being disbanded, due to resourcing issues. The intention and ambition is that this will allow the RGP to have a more visible presence in areas where they have not had in the past. Ros Astengo told us more.

  • 411 - Simon Parkes, Weather Advisory, Police Federation, Sports, Stroke Awareness

Gibraltar's Coroner's Court will open an inquest touching on the death of Simon Parkes, the sailor who disappeared in Gibraltar on the 12th December 1986. The Minister for Justice, Nigel Feetham, has given his consent. This follows a campaign by GBC Journalist Ros Astengo, with the support of lawyers acting on a pro-bono basis, to help bring justice for his family.

Over the course of the morning the MET office issued a weather advisory for heavy rain from ten this morning until one tomorrow night. A separate heavy rain warning may be issued if the total rainfall is expected to be more than 50 millimetres in six hours. We spoke to Principal Meteological Officer, Katy Lowe.

The Police Federation says a strong message needs to be sent out to anyone who believes they can use violence against emergency service and care workers with no more than a slap on the wrist. The police union says officers dedicate their lives to protecting the public and all they ask in return is to be protected in return. Chairman of the Police Federation, Calum Bruce, stressed this further in the studio.

Jose Mari Ruiz brought us the latest in sports, with both men’s and women’s football, the Special Olympics in Monaco, and Ironman 70.3 over in Tangier.

And, tomorrow is Stroke Awareness Day - there are several symptoms that you can look out for which can make a difference for the patient. In 2014 our Sports Co-ordinator, John Sheppard suffered a stroke during an indoor football match. The reaction time by those around him saved his life.

The Mayor of La Linea, Juan Franco, has called a demonstration for this evening under the slogan: "La Linea Matters - we are not invisible." El Kasbah is hosting a Bohemian Night tonight and tomorrow night with singer Surianne and poet Jonathan Teuma, accompanied by guitarist Win Fernandez. We spoke to Teu in the studio ahead of the gig.

They're asking for people to donate toys suitable for kids between the ages of 0-12. Chris Segovia and Ryan Asquez from the Agency told us how the idea came about.

Sports reporter Jose Mari Ruiz filled us in on the netball senior cup finals, the upcoming match for the women’s national football side, and a big weekend in Monaco for 6 of our local swimmers.

And, for this week’s edition of “Llanitos Abroad” we jet off to London in our latest to chat to a man who certainly has a way with words: Gabriel Moreno.
