In a move that caused an eruption of REPUBLICAN in-fighting, Donald Trump named Matt Gaetz as his pick for Attorney General of the United State of America. Judge Aileen Cannon's favoritism and bias in favor of Donald Trump is well-established. After Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his Republican legislators banned abortion in Florida after 6 weeks (at which point most women may not even know they're pregnant), 900,000 Floridians signed a petition to get abortion rights on the ballot as a constitutional amendment, designated as Amendment 4. A pro-choice group called Floridians Protecting Freedom created a TV ad supporting Amendment 4. The commercial plainly and inarguably constituted political speech protected by the First Amendment. Nevertheless, DeSantis and his henchmen issued cease and desist letters to 50 TV stations, threatening them with prosecution if they aired the pro-Amendment 4 commercial. Floridians Protecting Freedom filed suit in federal court seeking a restraining order prohibiting the state of Florida from violating their free speech rights. A federal judge granted the request for a restraining order, pointedly informing DeSantis of the following in his written ruling - " Too keep it simple for the State of Florida: it's the First Amendment, stupid." Recent reporting makes clear that Donald Trump is proudly and enthusiastically lawless. Someone should tell Donald Trump "You know, you have the right to NOT incriminate yourself." In a recent town hall campaign event, Trump repeatedly said "We did not have guns (at the US Capitol) on January 6th". By choosing to describe the insurrectionists using the personal plural pronoun "we", Trump directly aligned himself with the folks who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6th, there by incriminating himself (as he so often does). Interestingly, that statement is actually an incriminating twofer, given that Trump lied about his angry mob not being armed with firearms on January 6th. Trump was briefed on the morning of January 6th that members of the crowd WERE armed with firearms, to which Trump responded, "I don't care if they are armed, take down the fucking mags (metal detectors), and let my people in, they're not here to hurt me, then we can all march to the Capitol from here." The Supreme Court returned Trump's criminal case to DC Federal Court Judge Tanya Chutkan directing her to hold hearings to determine which of Trump's January 6th crimes involved official presidential acts and which did not. A federal judge in Arizona has rejected Mark Meadows' attempt to have his criminal case moved from Arizona state court to federal court, ruling that the things Meadows did with, at the direction of, and for the benefit of Donald Trump in tying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election - didn't constitute part of his official duties as Trump's Chief of Staff. Rudy Giuliani has failed in court yet again - this time in spectacular fashion. Giuliani had filed a lawsuit claiming President Joe Biden had defamed him in a 2020 presidential debate. The more JD Vance talks, the clearer it becomes that he's one of history's worst VP candidates. As The Washington Post reported, "Trump pledges to jail opponents, baselessly suggests election will be stolen from him." As we all know, Judge Aileen Cannon - who was appointed to the federal bench by Donald Trump - ruled that Special Counsel appointments are not lawful and she dismissed Trump's federal classified documents/obstruction of justice/espionage case. The presiding judge has dismissed his bankruptcy case, stating, "the lack of financial transparency (by Giuliani) is particularly troubling given concerns that Mr. Giuliani has engaged in self-dealing and that he has potential conflicts of interest that would hamper the administration of his bankruptcy case". With the dismissal of Rudy's bankruptcy case, Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman can now use all legal mechanisms to collect the $148 million he owes them, including seizing his assets. Trump-appointed judge Aileen Cannon continues to wear her Trump favoritism on her sleeve. A number of motions filed by Jack Smith have languished, remaining unresolved for months. As but one example, back in May, Smith filed a motion asking Judge Cannon to modify Trump's conditions of release to stop him from lying about and endangering FBI agents. Cannon has sat on that motion. However, Trump filed a motion asking Cannon to stay or pause a number of deadlines in his Florida case while he briefs-up issues regarding presidential immunity. Judge Cannon acted on Trump's motion IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS, ruling in his favor and giving him precisely what he wants. As has long been the case, Cannon's "impartiality might reasonably be questioned," which is the federal legal standard requiring her disqualification from the case. But, of course, she will ignore the federal law and continue to preside over the prosecution of the very defendant who gave her her lifetime appointment to the federal bench. Proving, once again, the fix is in. The Supreme Court didn't JUST rule that presidents have absolute presidential immunity. They actually ruled that presidents have absolute presidential immunity PLUS. Constitutional scholars left, right, and center are excoriating the new Supreme Court opinion that 1. contradicts the expressed language of our constitution, 2. actually repeals portions of our constitution, and, in essence, 3. declares the constitution is unconstitutional. Yes, that is illogical, but that is precisely what Chief Justice Roberts and the radical right-wing block of justices did in Trump vs. United States. This ruling gives Donald Trump a blueprint to convert America into a banana republic. And Donald Trump is exactly the kind of day-one-dictator who will do it. This ruling not only excuses lawless conduct by a corrupt president, it endorses such conduct, and thereby encourages future presidents to act lawlessly and to direct others to to the same then simply exercise his core constitutional power of the presidential pardon to pardon all of his criminal associates who carry out his unlawful commands. This is not just absolute presidential power. It is absolute presidential power PLUS. And like Dred Scott, Korematsu, and Plessy vs. Ferguson, this opinion must not stand. Just days after his right-wing Supreme Court justices gave him presidential immunity, Donald Trump has endorsed a military tribunal prosecution for former Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Presumably, the Supreme Court will have Trump's back on that crime as well. By granting Donald Trump immunity for the crimes he committed against the American people; the radical, right-wing block of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, actually encourages presidents to commit crimes. Eventually, this Supreme Court opinion will go the way of Dred Scott vs. Sanford, and Plessy vs. Ferguson - it will be reversed and will go down in American history as an opinion that sought to destroy honest and honorable governing, and accountability for crimes a president commits against the American people. But given that the opinion is in effect at the moment, President Joe Biden needs to exercise the powers the Supreme Court has given him to hold treasonous actors accountable and protect American democracy from the likes of Donald Trump and those who support his efforts to destroy American democracy. Interestingly, the Supreme Court does nothing to help Trump's criminal flunkies: Steve Bannon just reported to prison; Peter Navarro is serving a prison term; and Rudy Giuliani was just disbarred in New York and is facing multiple criminal prosecutions. Yet the Supreme Court just bestowed absolute presidential immunity on presidents, unleashing them to commit crimes against the American people with impunity and immunity. In an opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Supreme Court disregards the plain language of a law by which Congress criminalized conduct that "obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding." Roberts and the majority then delivers a gift to Donald Trump and several dozen of his insurrectionists. Importantly, in a dissenting opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, joined by justices Kagan and Sotomayor, call Roberts and the majority out for their flawed analysis, saying it "is like using a hammer to pound in a screw - it looks like it might work, but using it botches the job." She further exposes the majority for "failing to respect the prerogatives" of Congress and the Executive branch.
