The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump’s cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy’s emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract’s Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at the meaningful personal growth shown by folks like Markwayne Mullin and Joe Scarborough over the past year, going from openly denouncing fascists like Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump, respectively, to happily celebrating the future of their relationship to said fascists, before diving deep into the ongoing DNC implosion and what the future of the Party is likely to entail. Professor Josh Cowen then joins, diving right into the concept of school choice and the purpose of the voucher system, outlining how vouchers seek to make public dollars for education available for private tuition, supposedly to allow parents their choice of educational pathway for their child, before tackling exactly why this system fails to meet that goal, with private schools’ vastly increased ability to discriminate against students (via admissions or otherwise) meaning it becomes more “school’s choice” than “parent’s choice,” while the flood of money into private education markets under voucher systems, alongside the lack of transparency required for these private institutions, spurs the development of “subprime” providers who take this money in return for a significantly worse education that our public schools. Expanding on this, Josh walks Sam through the evolution of this parental rights’/school choice movement, beginning with the perfect storm of Milton Freedman’s desire to completely undermine the public school system in the US and the anti-segregationist backlash to Brown v. the Board of Education, and continuing through the growing prevalence of Christian Nationalist attacks on public education that we see today, exploring how reactionary forces bolster the drive to kill public education. After touching on the major financial impact the voucher program has had on public education, with a negative impact on its return end, Cowen wraps up by looking to the future of government-run-and-funded education under a Trump presidency, including the likelihood that he will actually dismantle the Department of Education, and why, despite the GOP’s electoral success, the voucher agenda has seen overwhelming backlash from voters. It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with Astead Herndon, national politics reporter at the New York Times and host of "The Run-Up" podcast, to break down a crazy first week post-election.  First, Sam runs through updates on the developing picture of Trump’s cabinet, the Stop Terror Financing Act, and CFPB and NLRB action, also touching on establishment responses to RFK’s nomination as HHS secretary and his dangerous take on vaccines. Astead Herndon then joins, diving right into the prevalent narrative of two deeply unpopular nominees that dominated the 2024 US presidential election, and why, in refusing to acknowledge their sides’ unpopularity (specifically when it came to the Biden Administration), Democrats and Harris completely failed to address the question of change in the eyes of the voters. Expanding on this, Herndon walks through the evolution of this overwhelming backlash to the Biden Administration, in particular, with his shocking decision to run for reelection in the wake of the 2022 midterms, committing the party to a vision of status-quo that voters had (visibly) been growing less and less content with, and gutting any opportunity – via primary or otherwise – to present or shape a new vision for what Democrats, and the Democratic nominee, were fighting for. After diving a little deeper into his research on the undecided, swing state voters that decided this election and making clear the obvious paths Democrats had to win them over, Astead and Sam explore another level of failed messaging on the part of the Democratic party, with rhetoric seeking to separate Trump from his GOP colleagues alongside ceding ground on the issues of crime and immigration allowed Trump to untether himself from the critiques of the former while claiming victory over the latter. Wrapping up, they tackle the particular arrogance that pushed the Democratic Party to ignore the myriad, obvious signs that a Biden-associated candidacy would be a non-starter for voters, and why they need to go back to the table and work on actually addressing voters’ concerns.

Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Trump’s neo-con pivot for his administration, Israel’s failure to meet a US deadline to boost aid to Gaza (and the unlikelihood of repercussions), calls to annex the West Bank, final tallies on the US Senate race, the GOP’s House majority, and civil unrest in Haiti, also touching on the importance of organizing in the wake of this election, and diving deep into Congress’ ongoing fight to pass the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” which would set the stage for Trump to abuse any non-profit that acts against him. David Dayen then joins, diving right into the broader context of this election within an era of overwhelmingly volatile politics, both within the US – as just the third instance of three-consecutive one-term presidencies – and globally – amid international anti-incumbent backlash – and why so much of that insecurity is a direct reflection of an economically insecure electorate with little-to-no faith in their political institutions (or those in control of them). Expanding on this, Dayen walks through the contrasting narratives around the US economy, with aggregate statistics and long-term predictions not reflecting the complete disappearance of a phenomenally successful pandemic-era social safety net, rising food and housing costs amid inflation, before he, Sam, and Emma step back to reflect on the long-term narrative of inaction and piecemeal action from the Biden Administration when it came to his primary agenda item of Build Back Better. Sam speaks with Molly Redden, reporter covering national politics at ProPublica, and Andy Kroll, reporter covering voting, elections, & democracy at ProPublica, to discuss their piece of reporting entitled “Put Them in Trauma”: Inside a Key MAGA Leader’s Plans for a New Trump Agenda. First, Sam runs through updates on the final six days to the US election, early voting numbers, RFK’s ballot problems, Trump’s threat to Police over mass deportations, the US economy, Israel’s en masse slaughter of civilians in Gaza and Lebanon, and Elon Musk v. the NLRB, before briefly touching on the role of Kamala Harris’ identity in voters’ support of/aversion to her. Molly Redden and Andy Kroll then join, diving right into who Russell Vought is in the context of Trump’s first administration (Director of the Office of Management and Budget), current campaign (policy director of the RNC platform committee), and the SUPPOSEDLY unrelated Project 2025 (co-author), before touching on the role he played in the evolution of the Trump team’s knowledge of the administrative state, and – more importantly – how to dismantle it. Craig Gent then joins, diving right into the mass proliferation of AI and algorithmic practices, not as a replacement for physical or technical labor, but as a replacement for management, exploring how the traditional role of human managers of overseeing a workplace has been replaced with automated systems that employ everything from gamification to surveillance and punishment to keep production in line with neoliberal aims of endless growth. Expanding on this, Gent walks through how these systems serve to further atomize and isolate an already alienated workforce, creating a supposedly infallible system that dictates their every move and completely obfuscates the power dynamics at play, resulting in a working environment with little to no space for agency, dignity, or solidarity, before briefly touching on how workers are desperately seeking for any way to leverage agency in these workspaces. Craig also highlights the pressing need for unions to open up their awareness to the threat of this technology, not as a tool that COULD be used to exploit them, but as ones that were explicitly created TO exploit them, working to suppress and pull back the exploitative nature of these systems rather than attempting to “share” in the benefit of this exploitation. Emma also tackles Bill Ackman’s defense of Trump’s appreciation of Adolf Hitler. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Tucker Carlson bring fascism to the TP gooning party, unpack Harris’ unchanging stance on Israel, and talk with Daniel from LA about LA’s city council race between Jurado and De Leon. Sam also touches on some data around the public perception of the Harris and Trump campaigns, the importance of Harris’ major social policy announcements, and the growing role of Gaza in certain swing states. Anna Heetman then joins, diving right into an outline of the ongoing fight from the Independence Tower and Quality Hill Towers tenant unions against the (ongoing) malpractice in the management, ownership, sale, and maintenance of their buildings, tackling the extensive membership of these tenant unions within the context of these towers, and walking through the laundry list of safety, security, health, and well-being concerns that has pervaded life in these complexes over the tenure of multiple owners. After briefly expanding on the chaos particularly brought on by the exploitative ownership of Parker Webb and FTW Investments, Heetman walks Sam through the major purpose behind this intensive organizing effort and rent strike, beyond even the more obvious material needs of tenants, exploring how this fight has highlighted the needs for greater regulation of federally-backed loans for property purchases, and rent control. Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Grace Blakeley, English economics & politics commentator, staff writer at Tribune, to discuss her recent book Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom.

First, Sam runs through updates on the final 14 days before the US presidential election, Israel’s ongoing assault on Palestine and potential pivot to Iran, environmental disaster in Cuba, Elon Musk’s failures and fraud in his work alongside the Trump campaign, National Association of Letter Carriers’ labor news, Tesla’s regulatory problems, and the US economy, before diving a little deeper into the insanity of Elon Musk launching contrasting ad campaigns in Michigan attempting to stoke anti-Semitic and Islamophobic fears in Muslim and Jewish communities. Grace Blakeley then joins, first working to unpack the commonly accepted dichotomy between capitalism and a centrally-planned (socialist) economy, with the dystopia of socialism juxtaposed by liberalism’s vision of free-market democracy, before wading into the problems and inaccuracies of this binary, namely the fact that liberalism’s defining qualities (free-markets and democracy) don’t apply to the existing capitalist societies of today (particularly the largest imperial powers like the US and UK), where wealth and political power are becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer elites, translating into what is essentially centrally-planned oligarchy. Blakeley steps back to walk through the evolution of capitalism to this point, tackling neoliberals’ work to publically redefine a libertarian “free market” as a return to natural systems, while elites privately saw it as an explicit vision to protect corporate power amid rising social movements, establishing clear economic norms against anything that could threaten privatization, the free movement of capital, and low tax rates, while creating international institutions (backed by the West) to dole out punishment for any revolutionary states that sought to challenge them abroad, before touching on the contrasting work of a Keynesian vision – backed by the working class – that pushed the idea of a protective state and well-regulated markets, and exploring the major success this ideology had in bolstering the US labor movement of the mid-20th Century. Next, Grace walks Sam through the eventual success of neoliberal theory with the regimes of Pinochet, Thatcher, and Reagan in the late 1970s and early ’80s, and their overwhelming work to crush and fragment the working class and social power that had bolstered the social and economic progress of the century to that point, setting the stage for the solidification of the oligarchies we see today. After briefly touching on the value of a return to a more Keynesian vision for economies, and the central importance of revitalizing working-class power, Berkeley wraps up the interview by exploring a few other visions for strong, democratic, and worker-led economies. And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks Trump’s most recent insult to workers (and whether that will even translate past the absurdity of it), and Elon Musk’s ongoing fraudulent and stochastic canvassing work for the Trump campaign. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris’ recent sit-down on Fox, Lina Khan’s role at the FTC under Biden, polling, Israel’s ongoing offensives and genocide in Gaza, US aid to Israel, Biden’s EPA, Georgia’s election shenanigans, Jimmy Carter’s age 100 ballot, DeSantis’ war on Florida’s abortion ballot measure, and a landmark settlement over the LA Catholic Church’s systemic sexual abuse, before diving a little deeper into assessments of Harris’ antagonistic interview on Fox. Hamilton Nolan then joins, diving right into the tight-knit and interdependent relationship between social movements and the institutions that cement the progress these movements seek, unpacking the central role labor unions have played as a ground zero for channeling the energy of social unrest into concrete political progress. After expanding on the disintegration of the state of labor in the US over the last 70 years, with even Biden – perhaps the most pro-union president over that time – overseeing a one-point drop in union rates, and the factors that drove that drop (namely staunch anti-union, anti-organizing, and pro-corporation legislation), Nolan steps back to explore how the environment that this dearth of union power has created makes it exceedingly difficult to push back against it, creating a completely asymmetrical battle between workers and corporations, and why the recent renaissance of labor consciousness – bolstered by folks like Sarah Nelson, Shawn Fian, and Felix Allen – must be capitalized on not just through legislation, by but widening and organizing the millions of Americans that still exist outside of these institutions, something essential to maintaining the progress that these unions can cement. Hamilton and Emma also touch on the major role labor is playing in pushing back against the anti-democratic (and anti-labor) urges of US imperialism, wrapping up the interview by exploring the changing image of the American worker (and the American union member), and why that must be embraced. Emma also touches on Trump’s egotistic and anti-social musings about the state of immigration under Biden-Harris. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with El Connipción from San Antonio about Ethan Klein and the conflation of Zionism and Judaism, watch Ezra Klein respond truly horrendously to Ta-Nehisi Coates challenging his inherent biases, and discuss the hypocrisy of White Supremacist rhetoric with Todd from Raleigh.
